- Japan, Pearl Harbor, Wake Island, Guam, Philippines, Dutch East Indies, Malaya, Hong Kong and more

- Germany and Italy
The United States had wanted to beat the Germans first. They had sunk ships with submarine warfare and killed many of our own people. The stories that were coming from Greta Britain were horrific and since we were closely tied to Great Britain, we wanted to help.

The Germans were using submarines to try to defeat their enemies. They used them to sink many ships. The instrument that we had however that made them lose was radar and sonar. There were radar planes which would advise their own ships and they could also locate and destroy other ships. Also there were sonar ships.

Active Defense in The Pacific
BATTLE OF THE CORAL SEA:
General Yamamoto wanted a major sea battle to prevent the U.S. from getting stronger. Took place on May 7th and 8th , 1942. It was air craft versus air craft and U.S. lost Lexington while Japan had to use it's fleet heading to Australia. Both suffered heavy casualties. |
BATTLE OF MIDWAY:
U.S. currently controlled midway but Japan wanted it. U.S. knew of the attack and sank 4 of Japans best carriers. The United States also desroyed many planes. This was Japans first major loss in the war. |
BATTLE OF GUADALCANAL:
Japan currently had taken control but the allies wanted it back. in operation "shoestring" 20,000 marines land on the island. They were very short on supplies due to an earlier loss but they still out fought the Japanese when they surrendered on February 9, 1943. Both sides had heavy losses and Japans advance was stopped. |
